Health, Safety, and Environmental

Patterson employs highly qualified and motivated environmental professionals. Our employee orientation process involves extensive training in environmental responsibilities. Additionally, employees are required to attend regular training sessions throughout their careers so that they remain current on environmental regulatory changes.
Our BISON (Behavioral Improvement Safety Observation Network) program provides employees and managers with a constant monitoring program to improve environmental compliance performance. Working with environmental regulatory agencies, Patterson Tubular Services has incorporated engineering and performance changes to reduce environmental impact of our operations dramatically. In the past five years, Patterson has gone from a large quantity generator of hazardous waste to a conditionally exempt status. We continue to explore “state of the art” equipment and processes to improve our environmental compliance programs.

Quality

In 1997, Patterson Tubular Services established a Quality Management System. In doing so, PTS has a documented and certified quality program to meet the internationally recognized ISO 9001:2000 standard. The present Quality Management System consists of a Quality Manual, System Procedures and very detailed Work Instructions.
To maintain the ISO Certification, Patterson Tubular Services’ quality program is audited by RPC’s Quality Department on a semi-annual schedule and by Det Norske Vertas (DNV), an internationally recognized auditing firm, on an annual basis.
Patterson Tubular Services has a quality program that is proactive instead of being reactive. The Quality Management Team performs an in-depth review of any problem that may occur and put in place prevention measurements so there will not be any reoccurrence.
As inspection is the main focus of PTS, there are work instructions that give comprehensive steps for all of the different types of non-destructive testing that is performed, i.e., full length magnetic particle testing, ultrasonic thickness gauge testing, ultrasonic weld line inspection, EMI computerized, etc.
Additionally, there are procedures in place to ensure that our customer’s products are handled with care, stored in the proper areas and provided a computerized inventory tracking system.
Employee participation and management commitment to providing the latest, most modern equipment and processes will continue to assure that our customers will receive quality products and excellent services in a timely, cost effective manner.
- ASNT - TC1A

Handling & Maintenance

We understand the importance of having your tubulars maintained and/or repaired correctly and on a timely basis. In both instances, there are real cost savings by having your inventories readily available to either a usable or sellable status. PTS offers a wide range of services such as:
- Brush, Roll & Spray Services – We offer a state-of-the-art unit, which is environmentally safe, that will remove rust and scale on 2-3/8” thru 16” tubulars. Our process will ensure a clean surface to enhance the bonding properties for a secure protective mill varnish coating. The coating we apply has an outstanding performance track record that will protect your tubulars during staging and/or storage time periods.
- ID Repair Services – These services entail an innovatively designed mechanical instrument that will grind slugs, hangers, etc. in the interior walls of tubulars. Once we perform this process, tubulars are restored to useable or sellable condition.
- Thread Repairs – PTS has a nationally recognized threading company working within its facility. They are capable of cutting new API threads along with thread repairs on new and used oil country tubulars. These threading services can be performed on both tubing and casing.
Our focus is to provide you with services that will meet or exceed your expectations each and every time.

Inspection services for pipe and tubes include;
- Ultrasonic & Electromagnetic Inspection
- Special End area inspection
- Magnetic Particle Inspection
- Visual Inspection
- Thread gauging
- Drift test
- ID and OD Brush coupled with a pass through mill varnish coating
- ID Defect repair services
Full Body Ultrasonic Inspections
Our Mill Systems alliance with NDT made it possible for us to introduce our first full body Phased Array inspection system in 2006. Since introduction, the system has been endorsed by major end users and manufacturers as the superior inspection with multiple features for optimization. We will continue to introduce new inspection products and software to the industry.
In addition, Patterson provides our traditional Conventional Ultrasonic inspections when Phased Array inspection is not advantageous or dictated by intended use requirements.
Inspection Advantages include;
- ASNT TC1A certified technicians
- Flexibility with regard to the inspection process and material requirements
- Repeatability testing on notches to plus or minus of 1 ½ dB variation.
- Programmable inspection angles and directions using both fixed and computer controlled beam steering angles
- ID and OD flaw detection for longitudinal, transverse, wall thickness, lamination and all oblique angle defects
- Optimization of the beam shape, dimensions and focal length relative to defect size and position.
- Operator selectable beam coverage and electronic scanning to produce an overlap to meet specified requirements
- Demonstrated capability records available for system performance review.
- API 5 UE defect prove-up software option.
- A-scan, B-scan and C-scan presentations in addition to conventional strip chart reporting displays.
- Wall Data collection system capable of producing wall thickness map and readings for the full length of each tube.
- The Wall Thickness Data can be displayed by digital report or C scan presentation.

Full Body Electro-Magnetic Inspections(EMI):
PTS Computerized EMI inspection systems and trained personnel perform longitudinal, transverse and wall thickness inspections. The systems are capable of producing electronic test reports, including digital strip charts of flaw and wall data. Compact discs are made to maintain a permanent inspection record for a minimum of 5 years. Each EMI system is coupled with an automated end area inspection line to streamline product flow and provide coverage for the un-inspected end zones.
Special End Area inspection
Special End Area (SEA) inspection lines incorporate automated high pressure washers for cleaning up to 24 inches linear pipe surfaces. Longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields are used to magnetize the tube and a wet magnetic particle solution is dispersed across the inside and outside surfaces Indications that may be harmful to product are visually identified and then investigated using probe grinding and/or Ultrasonics.
Magnetic Particle Inspection
Wet and Dry magnetic particle inspections are offered for carbon products as options for or supplements to the inspection of the pipe body and pipe ends.
Liquid Penetrant
Liquid Penetrant inspections are offered for non-magnetic metals.
Ultrasonic End Area
Ultrasonic End Area is a accomplished for longitudinal, Transverse, and/or wall thickness.
Thread Inspections
- Visual Inspection – Obvious damages
- Improved Visual Inspections includes inspections of thread length, Lc thread length, and make-up lengths of couplings.
- API Thread Gauging-performs thread element inspections that include, Thread height, lead, taper in additions to all thread length measurements.
- Optional Services offers Pitch diameter and Ovality.
Drift test
Drift test is provided for all carbon grades products and CRA materials with standard and oversize size drift.
Brush& Spray
Automated brushing of the outside diameter (OD) pipe surface and the application of environmentally safe varnish. The varnish is applied through a spray ring of nozzles and the operation is applicable to size ranges from 2 3/8” to 20” inch OD’s.
Internal Defect Repair Service
Internal diameter (ID) spot grinding to remove defects. During the internal grinding process the technician continuously monitors the pipe wall thickness to assure that there is sufficient thickness to facilitate the pipe repair. This equipment can be modified with tooling to remove internal slivers and light scale. The system is portable so we can provide service at one of our strategically located facilities or yours.
